Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a talking therapy which focuses on the 'here and now', whilst acknowledging a person's past can continue to impact them. CBT is an evidence based therapy and has is effective in treating many common mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, low mood and low self esteem. Therapy involves collaboration between therapist and client, working together to understand a problem or difficulty, what might be helping to maintain the difficulty, and how change might be possible.

I offer individual therapy for ages 16 years and above, either in-person or online. In-person sessions are held at Holy Rood Church in Stubbington (please refer to the 'find us' page).

I treat the following conditions:

  • Depression and low mood

  • Worry

  • Generalised Anxiety Disorder

  • Panic

  • Phobia

  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

  • Social Anxiety

  • Health Anxiety

  • Low self-esteem

Cost £75 per 50 minute session

Therapy starts with 'assessment and formulation', this involves developing a joint understanding of the difficulties you may be facing. This is often drawn as a diagram or 'formulation' which provides a way to understand an issue, what might be contributing to, or helping to maintain it. Formulations are based on CBT Theory and research. Many people find understanding their problem is the first step toward recovery. During the assessment process we consider your strengths this can help inform what treatment approach to take.

The next phase of therapy is to develop treatment goals and start a range of interventions which are proven to improve symptoms. Throughout therapy we will review progress, everyone is different, so people need different approaches and interventions. Regular reviews and feedback are a helpful way to identify what is working and what might need adjusting to be be effective.

The final phase of therapy involves developing a 'maintaining progress plan', this involves reflecting on what you have learned, what has been helpful and what you need to continue working on to maintain progress.

Recovery usually involves a number of steps and involves making changes, it is an ongoing process with ups and downs, however recovery possible. Many people find CBT therapy a helpful way to understand their difficulties and learn new skills to improve their symptoms. Some people find therapy supports them to start to make changes and that it provides accountability to continue, on what can be a difficult or challenging journey of change.

I provide a person centred, compassionate approach to therapy, which helps me adapt therapy to suit an individual, as one approach will not suit everyone. In general the recommended frequency of therapy is weekly, this helps to maintain momentum, sessions last for 50min.

My Experience

I originally qualified as an Occupational Therapist, and my first job was for Southern Health NHS Trust working in their forensic inpatient mental health service. This role involved working with patients with chronic and complex mental health conditions. I went on to work in Southern Health's ITalk therapy service and trained to become a qualified CBT Therapist. ITalk is a community service providing CBT for common mental health conditions. From there I went on to work for The Priory, Marchwood treating clients with eating disorders, and assessing clients within their acute inpatient mental health service. Since then my experience has been focused on working in the private sector as a CBT Therapist providing individual therapy for a range of mental health conditions. I have completed additional training in CBT for Long Term Conditions, Adapting CBT for people with Autism and CBT-E which is used when treating eating disorders.

Occupational Therapy Specialist Assessments

The Sensory Profile 2 family of assessments provides standardised tools to help evaluate a child's sensory processing patterns in the context of home, school and community based activities. The assessments can help to determine how sensory processing may be contributing to, or interfering with a child's participation in activities. As part of the assessment forms are completed by caregivers and teachers who are in the strongest position to observe the child's response to sensory interactions that occur throughout the day.

The Sensory Profile 2 helps you:

  • Identify and document the effect of sensory processing on a child's participation at home, school, and in the community
